do learn better in their home language This is not a verdict on English Shivali Tukdeo Since the early 19th centuryquestions surrounding language have occupied a rather uncomfortable place in the formal system of Indian education While the knowledge of English was unmistakeably part of the making of modern Indian educationits relationship with vernacular languages was a source of anxiety Education policy in the early post-Independence years struggled with the challenge of balancing language and learning How do we introduce students to multiple language-worldsin all their richness and complexities How do we teach them an appreciation of different knowledge systems How do we teach different scripts Some of these questions were addressed by the three-language formulawhere regional and official languages were introduced in schools at different points Several decades of language education policy and multilingual education laterthe question of language continues to be unsettling and unresolvedfor many reasons The recently approved National Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) policy is a case in point The proposaldrafted by the women and child development ministryincludes an overarching framework for early childhood education: regulation of playschools; infrastructure and sanitation norms; child-teacher ratio; better monitoring practices and curricular strategies The section on the inclusion of the mother tongue or home language and local vernaculars has predictably aroused animated reactions The inclusion of home or local languages in preschool is a step in the right directionfor educational as well as social reasons To begin withit is an obvious and overstated fact that young children learn better when they understand the language of instruction Equally important is the fact that children begin to respond to the world around them through their home languages even before they enter preschool and can go on to complex conceptual learning in these languages Early childhood education focuses on developing the following domains: cognitivephysicalemotionalsocial It also stresses on non-cognitive domains like motivation and curiosity Evidence-based studies on early childhood and research in educational psychology and cognition suggest that exposure to multiple languages can facilitate early development Importantlyearly childhood education revolves around activitiesdiscoveriesplaysstories and songs that go on to construct learning and meaning for the young child Emergent literacies ways to listenseeplayrespond and participate in ones close surroundings prepares the young ones for what comes later in schoolreading and writing Given the interactive nature of early learninghome languages and local vernaculars would be excellent resources to introduce the child to the rhymesrhythms and stories of a world that she inhabits With the inclusion of mother tongues and local vernaculars in preschoolsmany neighbourhoods and localitieswith their different storieswill enter the realm of school According to the 2011 censusIndia has 1587 million children in the age group of 0-6 years Strengthening anganwadis and non-formal early education would be essential to improve the overall quality of education Quality early education would also be the foundation for the realisation of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act (RTE) A large percentage of children drop out and experience learning difficulties because they do not have the opportunity to learn in their home language Its inclusion in the early yearsalong with English and other languageswould enhance their school experience The questions of medium of instructionlanguage choice and education often mirror the social relations of domination as well as the aspirations that have been associated with formal education For decadesAdivasi students have gone to school only to find the silence and invisibility of their languages If the responses to the recent textbooks in SanthaliGondi and Kok Barok are any indicationAdivasi children want to see their languages in school The development of local languages as languages of knowledge production and dissemination will be crucial in democratising our education But this development needs to occur keeping in mind the current material conditions and symbolic expectations of education Despite the constitutional guarantee (Article 350A)demands by minority language rights groups and growing research on educationlearning in the mother tongue or home language has not become part of the mainstream The language debate would be more productive if it were not framed within the binaries of either-or The proposal to introduce mother tongues or home languages is ladies of Game Of Thrones it is that you should never ever mess with them They will definitely come back for sweet revenge Rakshabandhan is celebrated as the day when sisters celebrate the presence of their brothers as a protector But women like Arya Stark Cersei Lannister Danaerys Targaryen and Margery Tyrell have proved that sometimes sisters do not necessarily need a brother to protect themselves Arya Stark Arya Stark has been on her own ever since her father Ned Stark was beheaded in front of her eyes Although she was from a family with all kind of privileges she accepted the times when life gave her nothing but poverty to look forward to Arya Stark is a true example of a survivor She is adaptable to change While avenging her family’s death not everyone has the quality to calmly prepare a kill list Danaerys Targaryen The mother of dragons was sold raped and tortured but yet she managed to survive and become the Queen There was a point of time in her life when her own men abandoned her but never has she lost hope Although in the recent episodes of the show her strong army and her allies are being brutally butchered by Lannisters she has not shown a single hint of losing the real battle When desperate times calls for desperate measures she manages to make the right decisions Only time can tell us if she can be the real queen Margaery Tyrell Margery Tyrell was one of the cleverest and sweetest women in Game Of Thrones She was diplomatic and knew clever ways of gaining trust and winning the hearts of people If she had any enemies it’s not because she was mean but rather because they were haters who just couldn’t take the fact that she was loved by all Margery also never lived in la la land She was aware of the upcoming dangers and took steps accordingly If only the Sparrows had paid heed to her words maybe she would not have died Cersei Lannister Perhaps the reason why Cersei Lannister does not have our sympathies is because life has not been as cruel to her as it has been for Arya Sansa andDanaerys Her evil schemes are beyond our wildest dreams but deep down she is really just an ambitious woman who is fiercely protective of her loved ones She wants nothing but the best for her sons and daughters and she couldn’t be more consumed with guilt and remorse for secretly knowing all along that her childrens’ deathswere largely due to her own fault But to give credit where its due she can pretty much take care of herself You know your survival hopes look bleak if you are not in her good books While others would go into depression due to their guilt and remorse Cersei keeps awake all night making plans on how to give the right kind of punishment to her enemies For all the latest Entertainment News download Indian every account I want to ask you did you get 15 lakh You didn’t get anything but Modi wore a suit worth Rs 10 lakh during Obama’s visit" he said The pinstripe bandhgala suit Modi wore on Sunday during American company won’t have to pay and it will be the Indian government which will pay the compensation" The Congress Vice President also took a dig at Modi on his Swachh Bharat Abhiyan saying the prime minister has not been able to address problems like inflation and employment "When you asked for employment and demanded that inflation be brought down he gave you a broom saying clean India and went to US and Australia" Asking people to support Congress in the upcoming Delhi Assembly polls Gandhi wondered what changes BJP will bring to Delhi as the party was already running the city as it was under President’s Rule "BJP says bring our government in Delhi But they are in power here they are already running Delhi" he said In a veiled attack on Arvind Kejriwal and Kiran Bedi he said the anti-graft movement led by Anna Hazare had people who are now in both AAP and BJP who "used to meet in Lodhi park in the morning and do the planning (to attack Congress)" "They had made big promises
